How to Repair Composite Decking if It Gets Damaged?

Friday, December 03, 2021

Composite Decking is usually made of wood fibers combined with plastic. Before the unsightly damage is resolved, repairing composite deck boards may require some preliminary research.

Dealing with discolored decking

WPC Decking exposed to the sun will eventually lose its luster and change color. Sanding is not an option for composite materials. Plastic burns and melts under intense friction and the discoloration problem may worsen rather than improve. Paints are also not recommended because they often do not adhere well to composite materials. However, stains will recolor the composite decking, although the color may be different from what appears on the can. Before investing time and money to stain the entire board. And be sure to try staining samples on inconspicuous parts of the board.

Stains, dirt, and grime

Regular cleaning-about once a year-helps to maintain the bright appearance of the composite deck. Although most deck cleaners are suitable for composite decking material and wood. Please check the label on the container to ensure that the product is safe for composite material. You can use a suitable degreaser to remove heavy dirt. The cleaning method varies by manufacturer and product line. Some composite deck materials are not suitable for cleaning with an electric washer. While others recommend setting them to a pressure of 1,500 to 3,000 pounds per square inch.

Repair the decorative board damage with filler

If the boards on your WPC decking have chips or small cracks. You can use a composite deck repair kit to repair them-it depending on the material and manufacturer of your boards. These repair kits usually consist of wax or epoxy-based fillers. And can use on damaged wood panels such as wood putty. Make sure that the damaged circuit board is clean, and then apply the filler to the crack or chip according to the kit’s instructions. You can then use a putty knife to smooth the application and provide a more uniform appearance to the repaired board.

Composite deck scratch repair

Similar to wooden decks, composite materials are prone to scratches and clanging due to moving outdoor furniture. The solution varies by manufacturer and product type. Some people advise against using scratches and scrapes because they will blend in with the rest of the board in time. Other manufacturers say that applying soldering irons to some of their products can mix defects and make them disappear. In this case, knowing the product and the company that made it can help determine the process used for scratch repair.

Repair more serious damage

Severe damage, such as deep scratches, broken circuit boards, and deep scratches, may require the replacement of the circuit board. Find the fasteners-some are hidden under the floor so that the screw heads are not exposed-loosen them and replace the entire board. Replacement is always an option, even if it is slightly damaged if it cannot be repaired to your satisfaction.
